Square gives away the readers for free and deducts 2.75 percent per purchase or charges $275 per month, not both.
That has helped keep the food truck rolling at Bohemia Moveable Feast Caterers, said owner Teri Fermo.
“I was at a crossroads because my credit card machine had broken a couple months ago, and it would have cost $600 to replace,” she said.
Doing without a machine wasn’t an option, since downtown office workers expect to be able to use their credit cards for lunch. Fermo signed up for Square, and she said she’s gotten a good return from it so far.
